When Palma turns into an Open-Air Gallery
30 years of contemporary art, open doors and magical moments
There are evenings when Palma feels a little bit different. The streets become busier, gallery doors stay open late, people wander from one historic courtyard to another, glasses are raised, music drifts through the old town and, almost without noticing, you find yourself standing in front of a work of art you would probably never have gone looking for.
This is Nit de l’Art.
On Saturday, 19 September 2026, Palma celebrates the 30th anniversary of one of Mallorca’s most important cultural nights. From 18:00 to 23:00, galleries, museums, cultural institutions and other spaces across the city will open their doors for an evening dedicated to contemporary art. The programme also extends beyond Palma to participating spaces in Andratx, Pollença and Santanyí, turning the event into an island-wide celebration of creativity.
And perhaps the best thing about Nit de l’Art is that you don’t have to consider yourself an “art person” to enjoy it.
An anniversary worth celebrating
Nit de l’Art began in 1997, when Palma gallery owners Pep Pinya and Xavier Fiol brought the city’s galleries together and opened their doors to the public late into the evening. Palma became a pioneer in Spain — and one of the first European cities to create this kind of city-wide contemporary art night.
Thirty years later, the idea has grown considerably.
The 2026 edition brings together more than 50 exhibitions and over 100 artists, with the 16 galleries belonging to Art Palma Contemporani taking part alongside museums, foundations and other cultural institutions.
Among the participating institutions are Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani, Fundació Miró Mallorca, Fundación Juan March, CaixaForum Palma, Casal Solleric, Can Balaguer, La Llotja, La Misericòrdia, the Museu de Mallorca and the Museu de Pollença.
In other words, this isn’t simply an evening spent visiting a handful of galleries. For one night, the city itself becomes part of the exhibition.
About Art Palma Contemporani
Behind much of this vibrant contemporary art programme is Art Palma Contemporani (APC), the association of contemporary art galleries of the Balearic Islands.
Founded in 2004, the association works to promote and strengthen the cultural life of the Balearic Islands, bringing together galleries committed to contemporary art and helping to establish the archipelago as an important cultural destination.
Today, Art Palma Contemporani comprises these 16 member galleries:
ABA ART, a66Gallery, Balazsi Gallery, BARÓ, CCA Andratx, Galería Fermay, Hauser & Wirth Menorca, LA BIBI Gallery, KEWENIG, Florit/Florit, 6a Taller i Galeria, Galería Maior, Galería Pelaires, Galeria Reus, Pep Llabrés Art Contemporani and Galería Xavier Fiol.
Nit de l’Art is perhaps its best-known annual event, but it is far from the only one. APC has also successfully organised Art Palma Brunch since 2005 and Art Palma Summer since 2016, creating regular opportunities throughout the year to discover exhibitions, artists and galleries across the islands.
In 2026, the calendar has expanded further with the launch of Mallorca PhotoFest, a new biennial festival dedicated entirely to photography and image. With activities distributed across Mallorca, the festival adds another dimension to the island’s growing contemporary art scene.
Together, these initiatives reflect a broader ambition: to make contemporary art not something encountered occasionally behind gallery doors, but a living part of Mallorca’s cultural landscape.

How to enjoy the night the most – The beauty of simply wandering
The easiest way to experience Nit de l’Art is also probably the most enjoyable: don’t try to see everything.
Choose an area of the old town, put on comfortable shoes and start walking.
Go into a gallery because something in the window catches your eye. Stay for ten minutes or half an hour. Listen to a conversation. Look at something you don’t immediately understand. Have a drink. Continue around the corner and discover another exhibition.
The official programme includes free guided tours in several languages, as well as artist encounters, concerts and special cultural projects.
There is no correct way to experience the night.
You can arrive knowing the names of contemporary artists, or you can arrive knowing absolutely nothing about contemporary art.
Both approaches work.
And if contemporary art isn’t really your thing?
This is where Nit de l’Art becomes particularly interesting.
You don’t need to visit a gallery and stand silently in front of a painting for twenty minutes wondering what it means. You can simply treat the evening as a different way of experiencing Palma.
The atmosphere alone is worth it.
Galleries invite visitors inside. Artists and curators are often present. Friends meet for drinks and dinner between exhibitions. Music appears in unexpected places.
And occasionally, something catches you completely by surprise.
Maybe it is a photograph. Maybe a sculpture. Maybe an enormous installation that makes no sense to you — until someone explains it. Or perhaps it is simply a beautiful old building that you would never have entered otherwise.
That’s the charm of Nit de l’Art: you don’t have to love every artwork. You only must be curious.
Where to begin
The main programme is centred around Palma, with participating galleries including ABA ART, Balazsi, Baró, Florit/Florit, Galería Fermay, Galería Maior, Galería Reus, Kewenig, La Bibi, Pelaires, Pep Llabrés and Xavier Fiol, among others.
As already mentioned, Art Palma Contemporani also lists participating spaces outside Palma, including a66 Gallery in Santanyí and CCA Andratx.
The 2026 programme includes exhibitions ranging from painting and sculpture to photography, installation and more experimental contemporary practices.
Among the exhibitions, ABA ART presents Ocre et lait by Tatiana Sarasa. Balazsi Gallery presents Garbage Worth Being Kept, with work by Román Fabré and Ian Soler Bradley, alongside Plagues by Patrick Goddard. BARÓ presents Latent by Alexandre Farto, better known as Vhils.
Pick maybe three or four places that sound interesting and let the evening unfold from there.
A different side of Mallorca
Mallorca has many faces, but some are easier to discover than others. Beyond the beaches, mountain villages and long summer lunches, there is a more creative, contemporary side of the island — one that comes alive each September in the heart of Palma.Nit de l’Art puts that side of the island firmly in the spotlight.
For visitors, it is a chance to see Palma differently.
