🎭 II Festival Internacional de Lírica Vila de Selva 2026 – Opera, Music & a Little Humour

Opera without the intimidation? Yes, please! 🎶🎭

From 8–15 November 2026, the II Festival Internacional de Lírica Vila de Selva returns for its second edition, bringing five encounters with opera, classical singing, theatre and musical storytelling to the charming Mallorcan village of Selva.

Under the motto “Lírica sense distàncies” (Opera Without Barriers), this year’s festival invites audiences to discover the world of lyrical music in a fresh, approachable and sometimes surprisingly humorous way.

Forget the idea that opera is only for experts. From Schumann’s romantic songs reimagined through WhatsApp voice messages to musical comedy, Shakespeare’s heroines and a playful introduction to opera for children, the festival proves that classical music can be moving, entertaining and accessible to everyone.

All five events take place at the Auditori d’Es Centre in Selva.

🎼 Festival Programme – 8–15 November 2026

SUNDAY 8 NOVEMBER · 18:00

🎵 Ich Grolle Nicht – Schumann’s Dichterliebe Reimagined

The festival opens with a contemporary interpretation of Robert Schumann’s famous song cycle Dichterliebe.

Performed by Joan Miquel Muñoz (baritone) and Jesús López (piano), this unusual production connects the 16 songs of Schumann’s masterpiece with 16 WhatsApp voice messages.

Each message introduces the emotional state of the performer before the corresponding song, helping audiences connect with the music and its feelings without necessarily understanding every word of the original German poetry.

A creative way to experience one of the great works of Romantic vocal music.

TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER · 10:30 & 12:15

🎭 Música Ma(g)estro – Opera for Children (and Curious Adults!)

Who says opera has to be serious?

Created by Diabolus in Música, Música Ma(g)estro is a playful introduction to lyrical music, designed for audiences aged 6 to 99.

Combining music, theatre and humour, the production introduces younger audiences to opera through an entertaining and imaginative performance.

With more than 400 performances since its creation, this educational production has introduced many children to the world of classical music.

Please note: The two performances are organised as an educational activity for local school pupils. Public admission has not been confirmed.

FRIDAY 13 NOVEMBER · 20:00

🎼 Carmen – A Musical Introduction to an Operatic Icon

One of the most famous operas of all time takes centre stage in this introductory talk by Pere Estelrich.

Carmen: Una aproximació musical al mite explores the music, characters and enduring appeal of Georges Bizet’s celebrated opera.

From the famous Habanera to the Toreador Song, discover the stories behind some of opera’s most recognisable melodies and gain a deeper understanding of this iconic work.

Designed as an accessible introduction, the talk is suitable for both opera enthusiasts and newcomers.

SATURDAY 14 NOVEMBER · 20:00

😂 Stand Up Lyric – When Opera Meets Comedy

Opera has a sense of humour. Who knew?

Stand Up Lyric brings a refreshing twist to classical singing, exploring the often-overlooked relationship between humour and lyrical music.

Featuring Pablo López (baritone) and Marc Laliga (piano), the performance combines music, comedy and entertaining reflections on the operatic world.

Through humorous examples and musical interpretations, the artists demonstrate that comedy has always played an important role in the history of opera.

A fun and unconventional introduction to lyrical music, particularly for anyone who thinks opera might be a little too serious.

SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER · 18:00

🎭 Les Dones de Shakespeare – The Women of Shakespeare

The festival concludes with a performance celebrating the women of Shakespeare’s plays and the music inspired by his extraordinary characters.

Featuring Maia Planas (soprano), Catalina Florit (actress) and Jesús López (piano), this theatrical and musical production brings together spoken word and classical singing.

While the actress gives voice to some of Shakespeare’s lesser-known female characters, the soprano performs music inspired by the playwright’s leading women.

A fascinating exploration of how Shakespeare’s words and characters have influenced composers throughout history.

🎶 Opera Without Barriers

The festival’s guiding idea, Lírica sense distàncies, is all about making lyrical music more accessible.

Rather than presenting opera as something distant or exclusive, the programme explores new ways of connecting with audiences through humour, storytelling, education and contemporary interpretations.

Whether you’re a lifelong classical music lover or simply curious to experience something different, this second edition offers a welcoming introduction to the world of opera.
