Mallorca’s Astronomical Highlights in 2025

Source: AstroMallorca & Diario de Mallorca

Mallorca’s night sky in 2025 promises a series of spectacular celestial events for astronomy enthusiasts. Here’s a summary of the most notable occurrences:

1. Eclipses

  • Partial Solar Eclipse: On March 29, the Moon will obscure approximately 30% of the Sun’s silhouette. Special solar viewing glasses will be provided by AstroMallorca for safe observation.
  • Lunar Eclipses: Two “blood moons” will occur, coloring the Moon reddish: the first on March 14 and the second on September 7.

2. Meteor Showers
Mallorca’s skies will light up with several meteor showers throughout the year, including:

  • Quadrantids (January 2-3)
  • Lyrids (April 21-22)
  • Perseids (August 12-13)
  • Geminids (December 10-14) – the most intense, with up to 120 meteors per hour.

August Supermoon: Just a few days before the Perseids light up the skies over Mallorca, another of the most eagerly awaited astronomical phenomena of the summer will take place: the August supermoon. The one on 10 August will be particularly spectacular and an ideal time to observe it from Mallorca will be between 21:00 and 23:00.

3. Planetary Alignments

  • Planetary Parade: From February 25-28, all planets in the Solar System will be visible, including Uranus and Neptune (with telescopes). Look for Mercury and Saturn near the horizon at sunset and Venus, Jupiter, and Mars higher up.
  • Venus and Jupiter Conjunction: On the morning of August 13, these two planets will appear close together in the sky.

4. Supermoon
On November 5, the full Moon will appear larger and brighter than usual as it reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit.

5. Saturn’s Rings
From April 11, Saturn’s rings will appear edge-on, making them almost invisible to the naked eye. AstroMallorca plans telescope sessions for public viewing.

6. Comet ‘Atlas’
While the comet C/2024 G3 (Atlas) has garnered attention, AstroMallorca advises that its visibility in Mallorca and Europe is limited. Comets, being unpredictable, may surprise observers later in the year.

7. Upcoming Observations
AstroMallorca will organize events and provide equipment for public observation, including telescopes and solar filters, to make these celestial phenomena accessible to everyone.
