✨ Geminids Over Mallorca 2025

How & where to watch the most spectacular meteor shower of the year

December’s night skies bring one of the most dazzling celestial events of the year: the Geminid meteor shower, famous for being the most intense, brilliant and reliable meteor display on the astronomical calendar. With up to 120 meteors per hour, the Geminids promise a breathtaking show over Mallorca — and this year, conditions look ideal.

🌠 When to watch

The Geminids are active from 4–20 December, but the peak night will be:

🗓 Night of 13–14 December
⏰ Maximum activity between 2:00 and 3:00 am

During this window, observers can expect the highest concentration of bright, fast meteors streaking across the sky.

🌌 Where to watch in Mallorca

According to astronomer Salvador Sánchez (FIAAM), the best viewing experience comes from:

  • Areas far from light pollution
  • Facing northeast after midnight
  • Looking toward the Gemini constellation, the radiant point of the shower

Thanks to typically clear December skies, the Balearics are one of Spain’s best regions for observing this phenomenon.

📸 Tips for photographing the Geminids

You don’t need professional gear – even a smartphone can capture the magic.

  • Make sure your device is fully charged
  • Use slow exposure mode (10–30 seconds)
  • Stabilise the phone on a tripod or solid surface
  • Be patient and shoot multiple frames

The long exposure will reveal meteors invisible to the naked eye, turning the sky into a glittering canvas.

💫 What makes the Geminids unique?

Unlike most meteor showers that originate from comets, the Geminids come from asteroid 3200 Phaethon, making them a rare and fascinating exception. Their fragments burn up in Earth’s atmosphere with unusual brightness and frequency — the reason astronomers consider them the most powerful meteor event of the year.

Whether you’re an astronomy lover or simply seeking a magical moment under the stars, the Geminids are unmissable. Wrap up warm, head to a dark sky spot, and let Mallorca’s skies put on their brightest winter show.🌌✨
