5 en Punto con… Alex Mairata

A new blog series by The Calendar Mallorca

🕔  “5 en punto” means five o’clock sharp in Spanish — just like our five quick-fire questions. In this new series, we’re catching up with Mallorca’s movers, makers, and magic-bringers — one quick question at a time.

In our second edition, we sat down with Alex Mairata, Content Manager at Etnia — the creative studio behind the distinct look of The Calendar Mallorca, as well as some of our favourite island-based businesses. He’s also the founder of the specialty coffee brand We Need To Talk, and when he’s not riding waves, you’ll probably find him on two wheels climbing through Mallorca’s mountains.

1. What’s keeping you busy (and inspired) in Mallorca right now?

Right now, Etnia is taking up the majority of my time. We’re growing faster than expected, so new clients every week and a bigger team challenge me daily. On top of this, I just released a specialty coffee brand, We Need To Talk, so when I’m not at the office, I’m roasting coffee (not that I’m complaining though!).

As we’re running all day, it’s increasingly difficult to find inspiration. But I force myself to stop at least once a week, and then the “magic” happens. I usually go to a cala with my dog, Nora, or take a hike in the mountains, always with some coffee in tow.

2. If Mallorca were a playlist, what would be your opening track — and why?

🎧 “One Day / Reckoning Song” by Asaf Avidan & the Mojos — click to listen

It’s the first song on my “Disconnect” playlist, and a lot of good memories start with that song.

3. Is there a place, ritual, or local habit that always makes you feel connected to Mallorca?

I’d say I stay connected to the island through sports in general.

Currently, cycling has been my main sport, and it’s amazing how many small villages you can find in the middle of nowhere by bike. When you cycle, you don’t go too fast, so it’s easier to stop in a village, talk with people, discover the streets, and somehow you feel more connected with the places.

4. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere… what’s your favourite way to unwind?

With this hot weather, I’d probably prepare a decent iced coffee, grab my AirPods, and find a good spot on the rocks next to the ocean. I just relax there with my dog while listening to some good music.

5. What’s one event or moment you’re most looking forward to?

At the end of July, I’ll be joining a trip with the Calama Collective. We’ll be living on a boat and surfing the best spots in the Maldives. I’m really looking forward to catching some good waves and being offline for a week!
